Annual Ryegrass (Lolium rigidum), Wild Oats (Avena spp.) and Sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) Are the Most Commonly Occurring Weeds in New South Wales Cropping Fields

چکیده

Weeds are a major impediment to crop and pasture production profitability in Australian farming systems, knowledge of their occurrence is vital devising weed management solutions. This study examined the relationships between species from observations made during surveys randomly selected fields grain and/or production. Between 2013 2017, 996 across New South Wales (NSW) were surveyed record density species. Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) (69% fields), wild oats (Avena spp.) (60%), sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) (34%) most common identified, with total 65 recorded be occurring NSW cropping fields. Densities weeds low, at one plant per square metre or less. Multiple recorded, varying survey regions; for example, Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana was more prevalent north fatua south. Differences noted this those previously conducted NSW, marked increases annual sowthistle, attributed change practices periods. The variable distribution patterns systems allows informed decision-making regarding research development planning.

Multiple herbicide-resistant Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) now dominates across the Western Australian grain belt

Lolium rigidum (annual or rigid ryegrass) is a widespread annual weed in cropping systems of southern Australia, and herbicide resistance in L. rigidum is a common problem in this region. In 2010, a random survey was conducted across the grain belt of Western Australia to determine the frequency of herbicide-resistant L. rigidum populations and to compare this with the results of previous surve...

High Seed Retention at Maturity of Annual Weeds Infesting Crop Fields Highlights the Potential for Harvest Weed Seed Control

Seed production of annual weeds persisting through cropping phases replenishes/establishes viable seed banks from which these weeds will continue to interfere with crop production. Harvest weed seed control (HWSC) systems are now viewed as an effective means of interrupting this process by targeting mature weed seed, preventing seed bank inputs. However, the efficacy of these systems is directl...

Resistance to Acetolactate Synthase-Inhibiting Herbicides in Annual Ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) Involves at Least Two Mechanisms.

WLR1, a biotype of Lolium rigidum Gaud. that had been treated with the sulfonylurea herbicide chlorsulfuron in 7 consecutive years, was found to be resistant to both the wheat-selective and the nonselective sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides. Biotype SLR31, which became cross-resistant to chlorsulfuron following treatment with the aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicide diclofop-methyl, was r...

New mode of action herbicides to combat herbicide resistant annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) in Australian cereal production

Herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass across southern Australia is currently a major issue for grain producers. Currently annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin) has evolved resistance to all post-emergent herbicides that can be used to control it in cereal crops and to the pre-emergent herbicide trifluralin. No new herbicide modes of action for the control of annual ryegrass have been market...

A new species of Aceria (Acari: Eriophyidae) damaging sowthistles, Sonchus spp. (Asteraceae), in Australia with notes on Aceria sonchi (Nalepa, 1902)

A new species of eriophyoid mite from Australia is described and illustrated. Aceria thalgi sp. n. causes severe curling and rolling of leaves of common introduced sowthistle, Sonchus oleraceus L. It also affects introduced Sonchus asper (L.) Hill and native Sonchus hydrophilus Boulos. The native species may be the original host for this mite. Aceria thalgi sp. n. is shown to be a separate spec...
